Biomedical Sciences Complex

Place: Padua
Customer: Aedilmap S.r.l.
Architect: Arch. Mario Botta
Year: 2007 – 2013
Surface: 13,500 m²

The new complex, intended to the new faculty of Biomedicine of the Padova University is located in the ex Rizzato area, represents a modern citadel for the students.

The building has a curved shape marked by radial volumes and overlooks a park of 50 thousand square meters.

The building is 30,000 m³ and 18,5 meters high. It houses 20 classrooms with a total  of nearly 2,000 seats; 30 laboratories for a total of 2,700 square meters; administrative offices and study rooms.

The project finds its “philosophy of composition” with the joint volume of five rectangular (“petals”) arranged radially and spaced from other smaller to form, in plant, a “flower”.

The “flower of Botta” is presented planimetrically as a fan which contains classrooms, computer rooms and laboratories located on 5 floors above ground, including a basement use as a parking lot.

The wide entrance hall is characterized by a semicircular void and is illuminated by the skylight at roof level.

The  energy saving criterion has been at the basis of the whole process of designing and building structure, both for architectural and construction aspects (building envelope), and for MEP systems (air conditioning and lighting).
